This one-year course in Pre-Algebra is for homeschooled students in 7th or 8th grade. We use Glencoe’s Pre-Algebra textbook plus the corresponding Glencoe consumable workbook to use in class for practice. Pre-Algebra is an important subject for students to master if they are planning to take the ACT since 23% of the math questions involve Pre-Algebra concepts! Even though Pre-Algebra deals with many of the concepts covered in earlier math classes, now is the time to solidify the students’ understanding of all these concepts in order to better prepare for Algebra 1 and for all future math courses.
An important component of succeeding in this class is learning the essential in-class skills of listening, taking notes, practicing with workbook problems and asking questions. Students will be taught these skills repeatedly throughout the year. In addition to the in-class skills, it will be vital for students to practice good study skills at home. Students will be required to complete three lessons outside of class every week and will be quizzed on those lessons with a short weekly in-class quiz. Parents and students need to correct all assigned homework by using the answer key at the back of the book. When students have questions about the material, they are encouraged to email, call or text the instructor. Pre-Algebra is the perfect time for students to learn to become more independent in their study habits as they prepare for high school and beyond.
